Agência FAPESP* – In partnership with the Center for Research and Innovation in Mental Health (CISM), the University Center of Jaguariúna (UniFAJ) and the Max Planck University Center (UniMAX Indaiatuba) have launched the Quick Guide on How to Assess, Intervene, and Refer 15 Mental Health Situations in Primary Care. 

The publication is the result of the “Educational Intervention in Mental Health” project, which aimed to educate professionals in the primary care network of the municipality of Jaguariúna in the state of São Paulo, Brazil. Conducted jointly by UniFAJ and the CISM, the project consisted of 18 remote classes, held once a week.

The CISM is one of FAPESP’s Applied Research Centers (ARCs), headquartered at the University of São Paulo (USP) in partnership with the Federal University of São Paulo (UNIFESP) and the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS).

The publication is intended for primary care professionals and provides practical guidelines for recognizing, managing, and referring patients with various needs, thereby supporting the management of common cases.

The 82-page manual is organized by topic and systematically covers common conditions in childhood and adolescence, such as ADHD and developmental delays, as well as conditions affecting adults. It provides a practical overview of the 15 most common situations encountered at UBSs, which are primary care clinics within Brazil’s national public health system, the SUS.

“The topics range from common conditions in childhood and adolescence, such as inattention, irritability, and developmental delays, to conditions prevalent in adulthood, such as anxiety,” explains Fernanda Lucia Capitanio Baeza, a psychiatrist, CISM researcher, and one of the organizers of the guide.
