Agência FAPESP – FAPESP and the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) are now accepting joint proposals involving researchers from the United Kingdom and São Paulo State, under the scope of the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) agreement.
The announcement was made by directors of FAPESP and the UKRI during FAPESP Week London, a symposium held February 11-12, 2019 at the Royal Society in London.
According to the agreement between FAPESP and the UKRI, researchers from the United Kingdom and the state of São Paulo can propose bilateral research studies throughout the year. Proposal analysis and funding decision are conducted jointly by the two agencies. For projects that are approved, FAPESP will fund research conducted in São Paulo State and the British Research Council will fund research conducted in the United Kingdom.
The EPSRC is the United Kingdom’s principal funding organization for research in Engineering and Physical Sciences. The Council supports studies in a wide range of fields, such as health technologies, structural, mechanical and manufacturing engineering, advanced materials, and chemistry.
FAPESP has already been accepting joint research proposals with six other research councils in the United Kingdom, organized by area of knowledge and together forming the UKRI: Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC), Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), Medical Research Council (MRC), Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC). Now the EPSRC and FAPESP will work on all lines related to Engineering and Physical Sciences.
The EPSRC’s signing the FAPESP/UKRI agreement will enable research study in all areas of knowledge to be included under the bilateral São Paulo-United Kingdom cooperation agreement. This is the first time that any researcher from any field can submit a proposal to FAPESP and the UKRI.
